Russell Welcomes Renewed CBC Commitment to Labrador

OTTAWA, May 27, 2009 — Labrador M.P. Todd Russell today welcomed the news that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has reversed plans to downsize its bureau in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

“Ever since the planned cutbacks were announced in March, CBC listeners in Labrador have rallied to support our public broadcaster,” Russell said. “I shared these concerns, raised the issue in the House of Commons, and took the matter to CBC management directly. I am thrilled that all of these efforts, from the grassroots, to town halls, to the halls of Parliament, have contributed to such a positive outcome.”

“CBC has recognized the importance of their radio service in Labrador, the value of local programming, and the vital role it plays in communications in our far-flung northern region. The expressions of support from every corner of Labrador helped persuade the broadcaster to revisit its earlier plans. On behalf of all Labradorians, I thank the CBC for having taken our concerns to heart.”

At the same time, the Labrador M.P. expressed his continuing concern about CBC service in other communities and regions.

“Happy Valley-Goose Bay is one CBC station among many which were originally targeted in the cost-cutting exercise. I know that CBC management have had to make very painful decisions, including cutbacks to the Corner Brook bureau which serves Labrador South, and other areas right across the country.”

“The budgetary situation is not of CBC’s own making, and I will continue to press the Conservative government to provide the CBC with the resources it needs to serve all Canadians, wherever they live.”
