RUSSELL ANNOUNCES CANADA SUMMER JOBS FUNDING FOR LABRADOR

LABRADOR, May 12, 2010 — Labrador M.P. Todd Russell today announced that federal funding for Labrador under the Canada Summer Jobs program will create summer employment for 145 students across Labrador.

“The Canada Summer Jobs program provides invaluable work experience for high school and post-secondary students across Canada,” Russell said. “It also supports students who are beginning or resuming post-secondary studies in the fall, by providing needed income during the summer months.”

Funding across Labrador under  this year’s Canada Summer Jobs program totals nearly $335,000. In all, approximately 80 employers will hire 145 summer students in communities in every region of the riding.

“This funding helps students, and helps employers to carry out new projects or to open for the summer season,” Russell said. “The Canada Summer Jobs program is vital for non-profit groups at work in our communities.”

Russell says that while he is pleased with the funding that has been provided for his riding, this year’s funding fails to address the crisis in youth unemployment across the country.

“Nationally, over 125,000 young people were left unemployed by the recession, and youth unemployment rates are still more than double the overall rate,” Russell said. “I hope that every student who is willing and able to work this summer can find employment, either through this program or through regular business hiring, but the government could and should be doing more.”
