Russell Supports Private Member’s Bill to Improve EI
OTTAWA, March 31, 2009 – The Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche, New Brunswick, Jean-Claude D’Amours, has introduced a private member’s bill to the House of Commons aimed at improving Employment Insurance (EI).
The tabling of the bill was seconded by Labrador MP, Todd Russell.
Mr. D’Amours had previously introduced this bill in May 2006 but had to table it again to the new Parliament formed after the premature elections in October.
“The two-week waiting period imposes a hardship on newly-unemployed workers and their families,” Labrador MP Todd Russell said. “I was pleased to lend my support to Jean-Claude’s bill, and look forward to seeing it progress through Parliament.”
“Many workers who lose their job must wait several weeks before receiving their first EI cheque. The amendments I am proposing will allow workers to receive an income within a shorter delay”, says Jean-Claude D’Amours.
