RUSSELL WELCOMES LATEST STEP TOWARDS NEW NATIONAL PARK

WABUSH, February 5, 2010 — Labrador M.P. Todd Russell today welcomed a joint federal-provincial agreement to take further steps towards the creation of a second national park in Labrador, in the Mealy Mountains region.

“The Mealy Mountains National Park proposal has been in the works now for forty years,” Russell said, “and today’s agreement is one more milestone on that path.”

The Labrador M.P. notes that today’s announcement is not the actual establishment of the park or park reserve. However, it still represents progress towards that goal.

“In speaking with community leaders from across Labrador, there is a lot of interest and excitement in the future national park,” Russell said. “At the same time, we all need to see the details of the federal-provincial memorandum of understanding, learn more about the waterway provincial park concept proposed for the Eagle River watershed, and get a clearer idea of the timeline between now and the actual park reserve establishment.

Russell is attending the 2010 Annual General Meeting of the Combined Councils of Labrador, the umbrella group representing Labrador municipalities and communities, in Wabush.
