What do the Harper Tories have planned for Canada Post?
OTTAWA, February 25, 2009 — Labrador MP Todd Russell says that the Harper Conservatives have to be open about their plans for Canada Post.
“The post office is a vital public service that reaches into every community in Canada,” Russell said. “It is an important federal presence everywhere in Labrador, from the smallest communities like Norman Bay or Mud Lake, to our largest towns like Labrador City and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The post office is still a crucial means for communication, and even for transportation of goods, such as supplies to the North Coast and other communities without a road link.”
Concerns about Canada Post have been revived after media reports this week that the Conservatives are considering privatizing the Post Office and other federal Crown corporations to help reduce the exploding federal deficit.
“Conservative mismanagement of the economy and the public finances are going to erase the thirteen years of sound management and debt reduction under the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments,” Russell said. “But Harper and his government cannot use their mismanagement as an excuse to cut a public service, threaten universal access to postal services, or slash postal worker’s jobs.”
